Augur

Augur

An augur was a priest of the Ancient Rome that practiced the divination officially. Augurs existed since the founding of Rome, exercising a practice borrowed from Greeks and Etruscans. His corporation was one of the four prestigious priestly colleges of Ancient Rome. It was an official post, although there were also private augurs. Only the magistrates could consult the official augurs, in special enclosures. The official position was for life, compatible with magistrates or other priestly offices. They had two types of books for their work: rituals and commentaries. The former contained fixed formulas; The seconds collected summaries of the performances. There were two kinds of soothsayers: ▪ that the gods impetraban the manifestation of his will, through ritual formulas. ▪ Those who deciphered the signs of the will of the gods, manifested without prior request. These were the most important, to the point that just declare that the auspices were unfavorable, they could void assemblies, elections or any resolution of the judges.
