The slave in charge of driving the mules of the basterna received the name of basternario. According to a description published by an anonymous poet in a Latin anthology, the interior was called cavea, and had a soft bed or mattress. It had covers and windows on the sides. Claude Saumaise proposes that the Latin word derived from the Greek βαστάζω The fashion of the use of the basterna passed from Italy to Gaul and then to other countries.
