Cofactor

Cofactor

A cofactor is a non-protein, thermostable and low molecular mass component, necessary for the action of an enzyme. The cofactor binds to a protein structure, called apoenzyme, and the apoenzyme-cofactor complex is called a holoenzyme. Those cofactors that are covalently attached to the apoenzyme are called prosthetic groups, whether organic or inorganic. Cofactors are basically of two types, metal ions and organic molecules, called coenzymes.
