Launa

Launa

The launa is a magnesia clay with a slate structure and bluish gray color, which results from the decomposition of clay slates, and because of its magnificent impermeable and insulating properties is used to cover ovens and roofs in the region of the Alpujarra granadina, the Alpujarra Almeriense and in the Campo de Cartagena, where it is called laguena. It was also used as protection for roofs built with sticks and canes in the Marquesado del Zenete region in villages such as La Calahorra, until in the seventies of last century was replaced by uralite boards. When they are wet they are impermeable and extremely slippery so they slide the different layers with great ease, causing serious damages by the erosion of the ground. Towards the year 1920 the town of Lanjarón was about to disappear dragged by a sliding of the lofts on which it sits. Other opinions consider that it is a slate in formation since occasionally, and at most, it comes accompanied by slate slates very small and thin.
