The pineal gland, pineal body or epiphysis is an organ that synchronizes the release of the hormone melatonin and others not yet studied with the light-dark phases. It is thus considered a neuroendocrine transducer and a "biological clock". In 1958, a team from Yale University, led by Aaron B. Lerner, discovered that the gland releases the hormone melatonin. Embryologically, it begins to develop in the second month of gestation. It is a small ovoid formation, flattened, that rests on the quadriplegia plate forming part of the ceiling of the diencephalon. The epiphysis or pineal is in some species sensitive to light and is in all related to the regulation of the cycles of wakefulness and sleep. In adult humans it measures about 5 mm to 10 mm in diameter and weighs approximately 150 milligrams. Their cells are called pinealocytes and in certain species are subdivided into photoreceptors and secretors. Photoreceptors are found in fish, amphibians and reptiles. In birds are less developed and is spoken of modified photoreceptors.

La glándula pineal, cuerpo pineal o epífisis es un órgano que sincroniza la liberación de la hormona melatonina y otras todavía no estudiadas con las fases de luz-oscuridad. Es así considerado un transductor neuroendocrino y un «reloj biológico». En 1958, un equipo de la Universidad de Yale, liderado por Aaron B. Lerner, descubrió que la glándula libera la hormona melatonina. Embriológicamente, comienza a desarrollarse en el segundo mes de gestación. Es una pequeña formación ovoidea, aplanada, que descansa sobre la lámina cuadrigémina formando parte del techo del diencéfalo. La epífisis o pineal es en algunas especies sensible a la luz y está en todas relacionada con la regulación de los ciclos de vigilia y sueño. En los humanos adultos mide unos 5 mm a 10 mm de diámetro y pesa aproximadamente 150 miligramos. Sus células se llaman pinealocitos y en ciertas especies se subdividen en fotorreceptores y secretadores. Los fotorreceptores se encuentran en peces, anfibios y reptiles. En las aves se encuentran menos desarrollados y se habla de fotorreceptores modificados.
