Exhaustion method

Méthode d'exhaustion

In mathematics, the method of exhaustion is an ancient method of computing areas, volumes and lengths of complex geometric figures. The quadrature is the search for the area of a surface, the rectification is that of the length of a curve. In the case of the computation of the area A of a plane figure, the method of exhaustion consists of a double reasoning by the absurd: one assumes that its area is strictly greater than A, then one arrives at a contradiction; it is then assumed that its area is strictly less than A, then we arrive at another contradiction. It is thus possible to show that the area of the figure is A. En mathématiques, la méthode d'exhaustion est un procédé ancien de calcul d'aires, de volumes et de longueurs de figures géométriques complexes.
