The inchoate / ɛkɔatif / aspect is initially said of the appearance of a verb proper to indicate either the beginning of an action or an activity or the entry into a state. This term is also applied to various verbal constructs and nonverbal elements which may confer on the utterance the same value. As the term "aspect" has different meanings according to linguists, its use for the inchoatif is long contested. This is the most general definition, which includes the inchoative, as well as the progressive or the resultative, for example, whatever the way one particular language uses it to translate it. It is difficult to restrict inchoation to the expression of the beginning of a trial as opposed to entering a state. In both cases, the transition from one initial state to another is involved: there is a transition from "nothing" to "something". This treatment makes it possible to account for the relations existing between the forms with an inchotive value and the transitivity. The difference between inchoation and progressive appearance is, in fact, more complex than it appears.

Ce terme est également appliqué à diverses constructions verbales et éléments non verbaux susceptibles de conférer à l'énoncé cette même valeur Le terme d’aspect ayant des acceptions différentes selon les linguistes, son utilisation pour l'inchoatif est contestée de longue date. On s'en tient ici à sa définition la plus générale, qui inclut l'inchoatif, aussi bien que le progressif ou le résultatif par exemple, quelle que soit la manière qu'utilise telle ou telle langue particulière pour le traduire. Il est difficile de restreindre l'inchoation à l'expression du début d'un procès par opposition à l'entrée dans un état. Dans les deux cas est mis en jeu le passage d'un état initial à un autre : il y a passage de "rien" à "quelque chose". Ce traitement permet de rendre compte des relations existant entre les formes à valeur inchoative et la transitivité. La différence entre inchoation et aspect progressif est, de fait, plus complexe qu'il n'y paraît.
