Tumulus

Tumulus

The Latin word tumulus denotes an artificial eminence, circular or not, covering a burial. The word "tombelle" is also used in French. A mound is made only of earth, a tumulus of earth and stones and finally a cairn, of stones. The tomb can be of very variable dimensions: from a simple deposit of burnt bones to a very elaborate sepulchral chamber made of dry stone and / or slabs, in which case we will speak of a megalithic tumulus. At present, tumuli of land are rare, as erosion and the action of man have partly erased them. The tumuli of stone are conserved rather well preserved. The tumulus is often consolidated on its periphery by a dry stone facing, or even by larger blocks or even by raised stones. In the case of the most imposing monuments, there may be an architectural façade at the entrance to the grave. Some tumuli are very elaborate and can be structured in concentric siding. They then show a stepped rise.
