A pharmacophor consists of a pharmacologically active portion of a model molecule. Pharmacophores are therefore sets of active atoms used in drug design. The pharmacophore is an idealized geometric representation, only the 3D modeling can allow an optimal use for the creation of new drugs. A pharmacophore is the set of functional groups arranged in a suitable spatial arrangement, ensuring the fixation of the drug on the receptor and therefore capable of inducing the physiological response. The skeleton of the molecule ensures the maintenance of this scaffold and does not play a priori any decisive role in the triggering of the response. In theory, drugs that cause a given physiological response on a given receptor should have the same pharmacophore.
