In French grammar, the pronoun is a variable word-tool whose main role is to substitute for any element, linguistic or not. The pronoun is thus above all a representative. ▪ Etymologically, pronoun means put for the name. ▪ Moreover, the pronoun can sometimes be the nucleus of a phrase: We saw something really interesting. The pronominal phrase "something really interesting" has as its nucleus the indefinite pronoun "something". ▪ Some pronouns have correspondents in the category of determinants. The difference between a pronoun and the corresponding determinant is that the determinant is always followed by the name kernel with which it forms a syntagm, while the pronoun is used alone, replacing both the determinant and the name: The holidays are over . I wish I could do it again. The phrase "Les vacances", made up of a core name updated by a determinant, is the antecedent of the personal pronoun "les".

En grammaire française, le pronom est un mot-outil variable dont le rôle principal est de se substituer à un élément quelconque, linguistique ou non. Le pronom est donc avant tout un représentant. ▪ Étymologiquement, pronom signifie mis pour le nom. ▪ Par ailleurs, le pronom peut parfois être le noyau d'un syntagme  : Nous avons vu quelque chose de vraiment intéressant. Le syntagme pronominal « quelque chose de vraiment intéressant » a pour noyau le pronom indéfini « quelque chose ». ▪ Certains pronoms ont des correspondants dans la catégorie des déterminants. La différence entre un pronom et le déterminant correspondant, est que le déterminant est toujours suivi du nom noyau avec lequel il forme un syntagme, tandis que le pronom est employé tout seul, remplaçant à la fois le déterminant et le nom : Les vacances sont terminées. Je voudrais pouvoir les recommencer. Le syntagme « Les vacances », constitué d'un nom noyau actualisé par un déterminant, est l'antécédent du pronom personnel « les ».
