The Symposium is perhaps the most well-known of Plato's dialogues. In particular, it differs from the other writings of the philosopher for his structure, which is articulated not so much in a dialogue as in the various parts of an oratory agony, in which each of the interlocutors, chosen among the flower of Athenian intellectuals, exhibits with a wide discourse his own theory on Eros. In 1988, Italian director Marco Ferreri filmed, for French television, some dialogues in the Symposium on Plato's banquet.

Il Simposio è forse il più conosciuto dei dialoghi di Platone. In particolare, si differenzia dagli altri scritti del filosofo per la sua struttura, che si articola non tanto in un dialogo, quanto nelle varie parti di un agone oratorio, in cui ciascuno degli interlocutori, scelti tra il fiore degli intellettuali ateniesi, espone con un ampio discorso la propria teoria su Eros. Nel 1988, il regista italiano Marco Ferreri ha trasposto filmicamente, per la televisione francese, alcuni dialoghi del Simposio ne Il banchetto di Platone.
