East
East is the direction in geography. It is one of the four cardinal or winding points opposite the west and perpendicular to the north and south. The east is the direction that the Earth spins on its axis and therefore, the Sun and the Moon rise from the east. However, in the field of astronomy, the eastern part of the Sun is defined as contrary to the direction of its rotation. Generally, the map of the earth is usually oriented so that its right side shows the east side of the earth. As such, countries in Asia are also called Eastern countries. This prevalence has existed since the European Renaissance. However, many Medieval maps are oriented to the East above and therefore East is also called Orient in English.
