Eparchy

Eparchia

Eparchia - in the eastern Christian territory subordinate metropolitan, and since the fifth century bishop, or equivalent of the western diocese. The term originates from the eastern part of the Roman Empire, the name of the province of Eparchy, after the territorial reform of Diocletian which is part of the larger territorial unit - the diocese. Individual Orthodox Churches regulate themselves, often with great separateness, the legal status of eparchy. The Polish Orthodox Church uses the name of the diocese. The eparchies, their liquidation and organization in the Eastern Catholic churches were made by the Pope. After a transitional period, since 1957, when the pope approved only the activities of the patriarchs and their synods, the Second Vatican Council decided that the pope established eparchies in churches without patriotic organization. The patriarch and provincial synod decide on the rest. In the Eastern Churches, the title of eparch is used instead or alternatively, or together with the title of bishop. W pozostałych decyduje patriarcha i synod prowincjonalny.
