Anschluß or Anschluss is a German word meaning connection or annexation. It is used in History to refer to the military-political annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938. This term is the opposite of the word Ausschluß, which characterizes the exclusion of Austria in the Kingdom of Prussia. In the treaty of Saint-Germain-en-Laye of 1919, that put an end to the Austro-Hungarian Empire, article 88 stipulated expressly that the union of Austria with Germany was forbidden. As is well known, Austria, in the tradition of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, was a multi-ethnic and multicultural nation. In Vienna and in the main Austrian cities lived people who spoke different languages ​​and practiced the most different religions. The Emperor of Austria had been the political figure who had given cohesion to the multicultural society of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This centralizing role did not have a correspondent in the new Austrian society. Many Jewish families, for example, remembered longing for those times gone by.

Este termo é o oposto à palavra Ausschluß, que caracteriza a exclusão de Áustria no Reino da Prússia. No tratado de Saint-Germain-en-Laye de 1919, que pôs fim ao Império Austro-Húngaro, o artigo 88 estipulava expressamente que a união de Áustria com Alemanha ficava proibida. Como se sabe, a Áustria, na tradição do Império Austro-Húngaro, era uma nação multi-étnica e multicultural. Em Viena e nas principais cidades austríacas viviam pessoas que falavam línguas diversas e praticavam as mais diferentes religiões.
