Bubastis

Bubástis

Bubastis was a city of Ancient Egypt, located in the delta of the river Nile, near the modern Zagazig. The ruins are known as Tell Basta. It is famous for having been the main site of the worship of the goddess Cat Bastet, where there was an annual festival in which sex and drink were excessive. A large part of the northern section of Bubaste was a cat graveyard, plus a graveyard for humans who wanted to be buried next to the sacred animals. The famous temple of Bast was in the center of the city, practically on an island because it was separated from the rest of the lands by canals running from the Nile. Only the entrance was built into a valley so that the whole city had a wonderful view of its interior.
