Pneumonia

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammatory disease in the lung-especially affecting the microscopic air sacs-associated with fever, chest symptoms and lack of air space on a chest x-ray. Pneumonia is usually caused by an infection, but there are a number of other causes. The infectious agents are: bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites. Typical symptoms include cough, chest pain, fever and difficulty breathing. Diagnostic tools include X-rays and sputum examination. Vaccines to prevent some types of pneumonia are available. Treatment depends on the underlying cause with presumptive bacterial pneumonia and can be treated with antibiotics. Although pneumonia was considered by William Osler in the nineteenth century as "the captain of the death of men," the advent of antibiotic therapy and vaccines in the twentieth century has brought better survival results. However, in the third world and among the very old, very young and the chronically ill, pneumonia remains a leading cause of death.
