Tsunami

Tsunami

A tsunami or tsunami is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of a body of water, such as an ocean or a large lake. Tsunamis are a frequent occurrence in the Pacific Ocean: approximately 195 events of this type have been recorded. Due to the immense volumes of water and energy involved, tsunamis can devastate coastal regions. Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and other underwater explosions, landslides and other mass movements, impacts, and other disturbances above or below water have the potential to generate a tsunami. The Greek historian Thucydides was the first to relate a tsunami to submarine earthquakes, but the understanding of the nature of the tsunami remained incipient until the twentieth century and is still the subject of research. Many ancient geological, geographic and oceanographic texts refer to tsunamis as seismic waves of the sea. Some weather conditions, such as deep depressions that cause tropical cyclones, can generate a storm called meteotsunami, which can raise tides several feet above normal level.
