ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD BÁLĂ

bálă (bále), s. f.1. Vietate, lighioană. – 2. Monstru, fiară. Probabil contracție de la boală, care se folosește curent în limba populară, ca termen depreciativ, aplicat mai ales vitelor. Primul său sens trebuie să fi fost, ca în boală, cel de „lighioană primejdioasă” sau „calamitate”. Accepția de „monstru”, care apare exclusiv în dicționare, este numai secundară și artificială, datorită asocierii instinctive cu balaur. În acest sens se folosește mai ales în literatura scrisă: uzul popular (cf. în DAR; o bală de cîine, o bală de copil, du-te’n bală, mînca-te-ar balele; în Candrea; o bală de ibovnică) se identifică perfect cu cel al lui boală. După altă ipoteză, este vorba de lat. bellua (Tiktin; REW 1026; Philippide, II, 633; Pascu, Arch. Rom., VI, 224), cf. alb. boljë, „dragon”, it. belva „fiară”; dar această explicație prezintă dificultăți fonetice. Hasdeu 2374, urmat de DAR, se gîndea la o formație modernă, pe baza lui bale, și o lega cu credința populară legată de balele dracului. În sfîrșit, Scriban pleacă de la lat. pop. billa „animal de tracțiune”.
