ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD FUNIGÉL

funigél (funigéi), s. m. – 1. Fir de pînză de păianjen care plutește liber în aer. – 2. Piesă de la războiul de țesut pe care se întind firele. Lat. *fŭnicĕllus, dim. de la fŭnis „funie”. Semantismul primei accepții se explică, întrucît este vorba de fire (cf. numele său francez, fil de la Vierge sau filandre). După ipoteza lui Pușcariu, Conv. lit., XXXIX, 67; Pușcariu 674; DAR; și Rosetti, Rhotacisme, 20, din lat. *fŭlĭgĕlla, dim. de la fŭlῑgo „funingine”, care nu pare posibil sub aspect semantic. Cel de al doilea sens, rar, apare numai în dicționarul lui Scriban. Pentru trecerea c › g, cf. formica › rom. dial., mr., megl. furnigă.
