ETYMOLOGY OF THE WORD STRĂÍN

străín (-nă), adj.1. Venetic, din altă parte. – 2. Necunoscut. – 3. Care nu este familiar. – 4. Al altuia, diferit. – Var. înv. strein, stri(i)n și der. Lat. extraneus (Miklosich, Cons., I, 58; Cihac, I, 264; Koerting 3526). Acest etimon admis de filologia mai veche a fost respins de moderni, din cauza dificultății fonetice: rezultatul normal pare că ar trebui să fie *strîi. Totuși este evident că acest cuvînt a suferit o alterare încă din lat., cf. rezultatele aberante din it. straino (Rohlfs, Ital., 464), tosc., umbr. straino, calabr. strainu „fără stăpîn”. Deși nu știm să explicăm mecanismul acestei modificări, se poate admite o metateză a lui i (extraneus*extrainu), ca în rubeusroib, habeataibă etc. În fine, probă irefutabilă că avem de a face cu un element moștenit este prezența der. astrina „a înstrăina” cu forma rotacizată astriirat în sec. XVI (cf. DAR). Este necesar, prin urmare, să pornim de la o fază intermediară a lat. extraneus; dar cele care s-au arătat pînă acum nu par sigure (lat. exterraneus, Crețu 371; lat. *exterrinus, Densusianu, Rom., XXXIII, 286 și R. critică, V, 134; lat. *extralienus, Pușcariu, Dacor., VIII, 105). Oricum, der. din sl. straninŭ „pelegrin” (Weigand, Jb., III, 214; Pușcariu 1651; Procopovici, Dacor, IV, 1157; REW 3098) sau sl. stranŭ „regiune” (Skok, Arch. Rom., VIII, 159) pare și mai dificil și nu se potrivește cu alte împrumuturi, cf. strană. Der. (în)străina (var. înv. astrina), vb. (a trimite în străinătate, a despămînteni; a aliena; a întoarce simpatia în ostilitate); înstrăinător, adj. (care înstrăinează); străinătate, s. f. (țară care nu este patria); înstrăinătate, s. f. (înv., exil, surghiun); străinește, adv. (ca străinii); străinism, s. n. (xenofilie; cuvînt străin).
