La teledetección es el conjunto de métodos para obtener información sobre la superficie terrestre u otros objetos que no son directamente accesibles mediante la medición e interpretación de los campos que emite. La radiación electromagnética reflejada o emitida sirve como soporte de información. A diferencia de otros métodos de adquisición que requieren acceso directo al objeto, se entiende por teledetección la exploración sin contacto de la superficie terrestre, incluida la atmósfera terrestre. La observación sin contacto es posible, por ejemplo, mediante sensores soportados por aeronaves o por satélite. Sin embargo, los drones y los globos también se utilizan como plataforma. La teledetección está asociada con la fotogrametría y la geodesia por satélite. La planetología y la astronomía, por otro lado, no están asociadas con la teledetección, aunque también se utilizan sensores de sensores remotos. En el caso de la teledetección, se utilizan sistemas pasivos o activos, por lo que se pueden evaluar rangos amplios del espectro electromagnético.

Die Fernerkundung ist die Gesamtheit der Verfahren zur Gewinnung von Informationen über die Erdoberfläche oder anderer nicht direkt zugänglicher Objekte durch Messung und Interpretation der von ihr ausgehenden Felder. Als Informationsträger dient dabei die reflektierte oder emittierte elektromagnetische Strahlung. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Erfassungsmethoden, die den direkten Zugang zum Objekt erfordern, versteht man unter Fernerkundung die berührungsfreie Erkundung der Erdoberfläche einschließlich der Erdatmosphäre. Eine berührungsfreie Beobachtung wird zum Beispiel durch flugzeuggetragene oder satellitengetragene Sensoren ermöglicht. Vereinzelt kommen aber auch Drohnen und Ballons als Plattform zum Einsatz. Der Fernerkundung zugeordnet sind Photogrammetrie und Satellitengeodäsie. Dagegen sind Planetologie und Astronomie nicht der Fernerkundung zugeordnet, obwohl auch hier Fernerkundungssensoren zum Einsatz kommen. Bei der Fernerkundung finden passive oder aktive Systeme Verwendung, wobei weite Bereiche des elektromagnetischen Spektrums ausgewertet werden können.
