Una solución acuosa es una solución en la que el disolvente es agua. Por lo general se muestra en las ecuaciones químicas añadiendo a la fórmula correspondiente. Las sustancias que son hidrófobas a menudo no se disuelven bien en agua, mientras que las que son hidrofílicas lo hacen. Un ejemplo de una sustancia hidrófila es cloruro de sodio. Los ácidos y bases son soluciones acuosas, como parte de sus definiciones de Arrhenius. La capacidad de una sustancia para disolverse en el agua se determina por si la sustancia puede igualar o exceder las fuertes fuerzas atractivas que las moléculas de agua generan entre sí. Si la sustancia carece de capacidad para disolverse en agua, las moléculas forman un precipitado. Las soluciones acuosas que conducen corriente eléctrica eficientemente contienen electrólitos fuertes, mientras que las que conducen mal se consideran que tienen electrolitos débiles.
