Catarata
Una catarata es una nubosidad de la lente dentro del ojo que conduce a una disminución de la visión. Es la causa más común de ceguera y se trata convencionalmente con cirugía. La pérdida visual se produce porque la opacificación de la lente obstruye la luz de pasar y se centra en la retina en la parte posterior del ojo. Es más comúnmente debido al envejecimiento, pero hay muchas otras causas. Con el tiempo, el pigmento amarillo-marrón se deposita en la lente y esto, junto con la interrupción de las fibras de la lente, reduce la transmisión de la luz y conduce a problemas visuales. Aquellos con cataratas a menudo experimentan dificultades para apreciar los colores y los cambios de contraste, conducir, leer, reconocer las caras y enfrentarse con el resplandor de las luces brillantes.
