En la teología católica romana, la detracción es el pecado de revelar las faltas de otra persona a una tercera persona sin una razón válida. Como en el caso del robo, la detracción es un pecado que exige la restitución, aunque la reconstrucción de la reputación de una víctima puede ser casi imposible. Una parábola comúnmente citada a este respecto se refiere a un sacerdote, a menudo llamado Filipe Neri, quien le dio a una mujer que había confesado difundir chismes la penitencia de recuperar las plumas que habían sido esparcidas por el viento -una tarea tan imposible como deshacer el daño que ella habia hecho.
