La palabra grotesco proviene de la misma raíz latina que la "gruta", que se originó de griego krypte "lugar oculto", es decir, una pequeña cueva o hueco. El significado original se limitó a un extravagante estilo de arte decorativo romano antiguo redescubierto y luego copiado en Roma a finales del siglo XV. Las "cuevas" eran de hecho las habitaciones y pasillos de la Domus Aurea, el complejo de palacios inacabado que Nero comenzó después del gran incendio de Roma en 64 dC, que había quedado cubierto y enterrado hasta que se volvieron a romper, sobre todo desde arriba.
