La nacionalidad es la relación jurídica entre una persona y un estado. La nacionalidad normalmente confiere cierta protección de la persona por el Estado, y algunas obligaciones de la persona hacia el Estado. Estos derechos y deberes varían de un país a otro. Se distingue técnicamente y legalmente de la ciudadanía, aunque en la mayoría de los países modernos todos los ciudadanos son ciudadanos del estado y todos los ciudadanos son nacionales del estado. En algunos casos, las determinaciones de nacionalidad también se rigen por el derecho internacional público -por ejemplo, por tratados sobre apatridia y el Convenio Europeo sobre Nacionalidad.
