Una precuela es una obra literaria, dramática o fílmica cuya historia precede a la de un trabajo anterior, centrándose en hechos que ocurren antes de la narración original. Una precuela es una obra que forma parte de una historia posterior a la obra anterior. Todas las "precuelas" son, por definición, esencialmente secuelas en que "se expanden sobre un trabajo anterior o anterior". El término es un neologismo del siglo XX construido a partir de pre-y-quel, que se formó por la división de la "secuela" en el supuesto prefijo "se-" y el supuesto tallo "- quel". Como las secuelas, los prequels pueden o no referirse a la misma trama que el trabajo del que se derivan. A menudo, explican los antecedentes que llevaron a los acontecimientos en el original, pero a veces las conexiones no son tan explícitas.
