phlogiston
Le Phlogiston est une substance hypothétique, à partir de laquelle il a été supposé à la fin des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles qu'il a échappé à tous les corps combustibles pendant la combustion et a pénétré dans celui-ci lorsqu'il a été chauffé. La théorie du phlogiston était importante dans l'interprétation des processus de réduction et d'oxydation, tels que le potentiel différent des différents composés. Au 18ème siècle, les premières réfutations ont eu lieu et le rôle de l'oxygène dans les processus de combustion a été décrit et quantifié. La théorie de la phlogistont est donc une des erreurs scientifiques, plus précisément, elle serait décrite comme un paradigme au sens de Thomas S. Kuhn, comme l'a fait lui-même ce dernier dans son livre The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. La théorie de la phlogistont était moins préoccupée par les processus quantitatifs que le potentiel redox des substances impliquées.
