L'acacia, connue sous le nom d'acacia, de thorntree, d'épine sifflante ou d'acuité, est un genre d'arbustes et d'arbres appartenant à la sous-famille Mimosoideae de la famille Fabaceae, décrite par le botaniste suédois Carl Linnaeus en 1773 sur la base de l'espèce africaine Acacia nilotica. De nombreuses espèces non australiennes ont tendance à être épineuses, alors que la majorité des acacias australiennes ne le sont pas. Toutes les espèces sont en forme de gousse, la sève et les feuilles contiennent souvent de grandes quantités de tanins et de tanins condensés qui, historiquement, ont été utilisés comme produits pharmaceutiques et conservateurs. Le nom générique dérive de ἀκακία, le nom donné par le précurseur botanique grec Pedanius Dioscorides à l'arbre médical A. nilotica dans son livre Materia Medica. Ce nom dérive du mot grec pour ses épines caractéristiques, ἀκίς. Le nom de l'espèce nilotica a été donné par Linnaeus à partir de la chaîne la plus connue de cet arbre le long de la rivière Nil.

Acacia, known commonly as acacia, thorntree, whistling thorn, or wattle, is a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the subfamily Mimosoideae of the family Fabaceae, described by the Swedish botanist Carl Linnaeus in 1773 based on the African species Acacia nilotica. Many non-Australian species tend to be thorny, whereas the majority of Australian acacias are not. All species are pod-bearing, with sap and leaves often bearing large amounts of tannins and condensed tannins that historically found use as pharmaceuticals and preservatives. The generic name derives from ἀκακία, the name given by early Greek botanist-physician Pedanius Dioscorides to the medicinal tree A. nilotica in his book Materia Medica. This name derives from the Greek word for its characteristic thorns, ἀκίς. The species name nilotica was given by Linnaeus from this tree's best-known range along the Nile river.
