Le poumon pulmonaire du Queensland, Neoceratodus forsteri est le seul membre survivant de la famille Ceratodontidae et commande Ceratodontiformes. C'est l'une des six espèces de poissons-poulets existantes dans le monde. Endémiques de l'Australie, les Ceratodontidae sont une famille ancienne appartenant à la sous-classe Sarcopterygii, ou aux poissons à nageoires charnelles. Les enregistrements fossiles de ce groupe datent de 380 millions d'années, autour du moment où les classes de vertébrés supérieurs commencent à évoluer. Les fossiles de poisson pulmonaire presque identiques à cette espèce ont été découverts dans le nord de la Nouvelle-Galles du Sud, ce qui indique que Neoceratodus est resté pratiquement inchangé depuis plus de 100 millions d'années, ce qui en fait un fossile vivant et l'un des plus anciens genres de vertébrés vivants de la planète. C'est l'un des six représentants existants de l'ancien Dipnoi respirant l'air qui a prospéré pendant la période dévonienne et est le membre survivant le plus primitif de cette lignée. Les cinq autres espèces de poissons pulmonaires d'eau douce, quatre en Afrique et une en Amérique du Sud, sont très différentes de façon morphologique de N. forsteri.
