La paralysie de Bell est une forme de paralysie faciale résultant d'un dysfonctionnement du nerf crânien VII entraînant une incapacité à contrôler les muscles faciaux du côté affecté. Plusieurs conditions peuvent provoquer une paralysie faciale, par exemple une tumeur cérébrale, un accident vasculaire cérébral, une myasthénie grave et une maladie de Lyme. Cependant, si aucune cause spécifique ne peut être identifiée, la condition est connue sous le nom de paralysie de Bell. Nommé par l'anatomiste écossais Charles Bell, qui l'a décrit pour la première fois, la paralysie de Bell est la mononeuropathie aiguë la plus fréquente et est la cause la plus fréquente de paralysie aiguë du nerf facial. La paralysie de Bell est définie comme une paralysie idiopathique unilatérale du nerf facial, généralement autolimitée. La caractéristique de cette condition est un début rapide de paralysie partielle ou complète qui se produit souvent du jour au lendemain. Dans de rares cas, il peut se produire bilatéralement entraînant une paralysie totale du visage. On pense qu'une affection inflammatoire entraîne un gonflement du nerf facial.
