Asphalte
L'asphalte, également connu sous le nom de bitume, est une forme liquide ou semi-solide de pétrole collante, noire et très visqueuse. On le retrouve dans des dépôts naturels ou peut être un produit raffiné; C'est une substance classée comme un terrain. Jusqu'au 20ème siècle, le terme asphaltum était également utilisé. L'utilisation principale de l'asphalte / bitume est dans la construction de routes, où elle est utilisée comme colle ou liant mélangé avec des particules d'agrégats pour créer du béton d'asphalte. Ses autres utilisations principales sont pour les produits d'étanchéité bitumineux, y compris la production de feutres de toiture et pour l'étanchéité des toits plats. Les termes asphalte et bitume sont souvent utilisés indifféremment pour signifier à la fois des formes naturelles et fabriquées de la substance. En anglais américain, l'asphalte est le résidu soigneusement raffiné du processus de distillation des huiles brutes sélectionnées. En dehors des États-Unis, le produit est souvent appelé bitume. La terminologie géologique préfère souvent le terme bitume. L'utilisation commune se réfère souvent à diverses formes d'asphalte / bitume comme «goudron», comme chez les crevettes La Brea. Un autre terme, surtout archaïque, se réfère à l'asphalte / bitume comme "pitch".
