String (informatique)
Dans la programmation informatique, une chaîne est traditionnellement une séquence de caractères, soit comme une constante littérale, soit comme une sorte de variable. Ce dernier peut permettre à ses éléments d'être mutés et la longueur changée, ou peut être corrigée. Une chaîne est généralement comprise comme un type de données et est souvent implémentée sous la forme d'un ensemble d'octets qui stocke une séquence d'éléments, typiquement des caractères, en utilisant un encodage de caractères. Une chaîne peut également désigner des tableaux plus généraux ou d'autres types et structures de données de séquence. En fonction du langage de programmation et du type de données précis utilisé, une variable déclarée comme une chaîne peut soit amener le stockage en mémoire à être affecté de manière statique pour une longueur maximale prédéterminée, soit utiliser une allocation dynamique pour lui permettre de contenir un nombre variable d'éléments. Lorsqu'une chaîne apparaît littéralement dans le code source, elle est connue comme un littéral de chaîne et a une représentation qui le désigne en tant que tel. Dans les langues formelles, qui sont utilisées dans la logique mathématique et l'informatique théorique, une chaîne est une séquence finie de symboles choisis parmi un ensemble appelé alphabet.
