Un chef tribal est le chef d'une société tribale ou d'une chefferie. Les sociétés tribales avec une stratification sociale sous un seul dirigeant ont émergé dans la période néolithique des structures tribales antérieures avec peu de stratification, et elles sont demeurées répandues tout au long de l'âge du fer. Dans le cas des sociétés tribales indigènes existant dans les grands états coloniaux et post-coloniaux, les chefs tribaux peuvent représenter leur tribu ou leur appartenance ethnique sous une forme d'autonomie gouvernementale. Les types les plus courants sont le président d'un conseil et / ou une assemblée populaire plus large dans les cultures "parlementaires", le chef de guerre, le chef héréditaire et le médecin politique. Le terme est généralement distinct des chefs à des niveaux encore plus bas, comme le chef de village ou le chef de clan, car la notion de «tribal» exige plutôt une identité ethnoculturelle et une certaine expression politique. Dans certaines situations, et surtout dans un contexte colonial, le membre le plus puissant d'une confédération ou d'une fédération de chefs de tribus, de clans ou de villages serait désigné comme un chef primordial. Ce terme est largement tombé de l'utilisation, mais ces personnages sont souvent appelés rois.
