Le Crétacé, dérivé du latin "creta", généralement abrégé K pour sa traduction allemande Kreide, est une période géologique et un système d'environ 145 ± 4 à 66 millions d'années. Dans le calendrier géologique, le Crétacé suit la période jurassique et est suivi de la période de Paléogène de l'ère Cenozoïque. C'est la dernière période de l'ère mésozoïque et, s'étendant sur 79 millions d'années, la période la plus longue de l'Eon Phanérozoïque. Le Crétacé a été une période avec un climat relativement chaud, entraînant un niveau élevé de l'eau de l'Eustache et créant de nombreuses mers intérieures peu profondes. Ces océans et ces mers étaient peuplés de reptiles marins, d'ammonites et de rudistes maintenant éteints, tandis que les dinosaures continuaient à dominer sur terre. Parallèlement, de nouveaux groupes de mammifères et d'oiseaux, ainsi que des plantes à fleurs apparaissent. The Cretaceous, derived from the Latin "creta", usually abbreviated K for its German translation Kreide, is a geologic period and system from circa 145 ± 4 to 66 million years ago. In the geologic timescale, the Cretaceous follows the Jurassic period and is followed by the Paleogene period of the Cenozoic era. It is the last period of the Mesozoic Era, and, spanning 79 million years, the longest period of the Phanerozoic Eon. The Cretaceous was a period with a relatively warm climate, resulting in high eustatic sea levels and creating numerous shallow inland seas. These oceans and seas were populated with now-extinct marine reptiles, ammonites and rudists, while dinosaurs continued to dominate on land. At the same time, new groups of mammals and birds, as well as flowering plants, appeared. The Cretaceous ended with a large mass extinction, the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, in which many groups, including non-avian dinosaurs, pterosaurs and large marine reptiles, died out. The end of the Cretaceous is defined by the K–Pg boundary, a geologic signature associated with the mass extinction which lies between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras.
