Sur certaines machines, ces commutateurs ne font que remonter les machines à un état sécurisé, par exemple en réduisant l'accélérateur au ralenti ou en appliquant des freins tout en laissant les machines toujours en marche et prêt à reprendre le fonctionnement normal une fois que le contrôle est rétabli. Lorsque le commutateur est électrique, il est généralement câblé dans le cadre d'un circuit en série. Les interrupteurs de l'homme mort ne sont pas toujours utilisés pour arrêter les machines et prévenir les dommages. Ces commutateurs peuvent également être utilisés comme défaillants.
