Le délire, ou un état de confusion aiguë, est un syndrome qui se présente sous deux formes fondamentales. Sous sa forme hyperactive, il se manifeste comme une grave confusion et désorientation, se développant avec un début relativement rapide et une intensité fluctuante. Dans sa forme hypoactive, il se manifeste par un retrait tout aussi soudain de l'interaction avec le monde extérieur. Le délire en tant que syndrome est celui qui se produit plus fréquemment chez les personnes dans leur dernière année. Cependant, lorsqu'elle survient au cours d'une maladie critique, le délire a été constaté chez des patients jeunes et âgés à des taux relativement modérés. Le délire représente un déclin organique découlé d'un niveau de base initialement atteint de la fonction cognitive. Il se caractérise par des cours fluctuants, des déficits attentionaux et une désorganisation sévère généralisée du comportement. Cela implique généralement d'autres déficits cognitifs, des changements d'éveil, des déficits perceptuels, un cycle de sommeil-réveil altéré et des caractéristiques psychotiques telles que des hallucinations et des illusions.
