Suffrage
Le suffrage, la franchise politique, ou simplement la franchise, distincte des autres droits de vote, est le droit de vote obtenu grâce au processus démocratique. Le droit de candidature est parfois appelé l'éligibilité du candidat, et la combinaison des deux droits est parfois appelée suffrage complet. Dans de nombreuses langues, le droit de vote s'appelle le droit de vote actif et le droit de candidature est appelé le droit de vote passif. En anglais, on parle parfois du suffrage actif et du suffrage passif. Le suffrage est souvent conçu en termes d'élections pour les représentants. Cependant, le suffrage s'applique également aux initiatives et aux référendums. Le suffrage décrit non seulement le droit de vote légal, mais aussi la question pratique de savoir si une question sera mise aux voix. L'utilité du suffrage est réduite lorsque des questions importantes sont décidées unilatéralement par des représentants élus ou non élus. Dans la plupart des démocraties, les électeurs admissibles peuvent voter aux élections des représentants.
