Un favori ou un favori, était le compagnon intime d'une règle ou d'une autre personne importante. Dans l'Europe médiévale et début moderne, entre autres fois et les lieux, le terme est utilisé par des individus délégués d'un pouvoir politique important par un dirigeant. C'est surtout un phénomène des XVIe et XVIIe siècles, lorsque le gouvernement est devenu trop complexe pour de nombreux dirigeants héréditaires sans grand intérêt ou talent, et les institutions politiques évoluent encore. La période 1600-1660 a vu des successions particulières de favoris de tous les pays puissants dans une grande partie de l'Europe, en particulier en Espagne, en Angleterre, en France et en Suède. Le terme est parfois employé par des écrivains conservateurs qui veulent éviter des termes tels que «maîtresse royale», «ami», «compagnon» ou «amoureux» de l'un ou l'autre sexe. Plusieurs favoris avaient des relations sexuelles avec le monarque, mais les sentiments du monarque pour le favori couvraient toute la gamme d'une foi simple dans les capacités du favori, à travers divers degrés d'affection affective et de dépendance, à l'infatuation sexuelle.
