La friction est la force résistant au mouvement relatif des surfaces solides, des couches fluides et des éléments matériels glissant l'un contre l'autre. Il existe plusieurs types de friction: ▪ Le frottement sec résiste au contact latéral relatif de deux surfaces solides en contact. Le frottement à sec est subdivisé en frottement statique entre les surfaces non mobiles et le frottement cinétique entre les surfaces mobiles. ▪ Le frottement des fluides décrit le frottement entre les couches d'un fluide visqueux qui se déplacent l'un par rapport à l'autre. ▪ Le frottement lubrifié est un cas de frottement fluide où un fluide sépare deux surfaces solides. ▪ La friction de la peau est une composante de la traînée, la force résistant au mouvement d'un fluide à travers la surface d'un corps. ▪ Le frottement interne est le mouvement résistant à la force entre les éléments constituant un matériau solide alors qu'il subit une déformation.
