L'immunisation ou l'immunisation est le processus par lequel le système immunitaire d'un individu devient fortifié contre un agent. Lorsque ce système est exposé à des molécules étrangères au corps, appelé non-soi, il orchestrera une réponse immunitaire, et il développera aussi la capacité à répondre rapidement à une rencontre ultérieure en raison de la mémoire immunologique. C'est une fonction du système immunitaire adaptatif. Par conséquent, en exposant un animal à un immunogène de manière contrôlée, son corps peut apprendre à se protéger: c'est ce qu'on appelle une immunisation active. Les éléments les plus importants du système immunitaire qui sont améliorés par immunisation sont les cellules T, les cellules B et les anticorps des cellules B. Les cellules mémoire B et les cellules T de mémoire sont responsables d'une réponse rapide à une deuxième rencontre avec une molécule étrangère. L'immunisation passive est lorsque ces éléments sont introduits directement dans le corps, au lieu de savoir quand le corps lui-même doit faire ces éléments. L'immunisation se fait par diverses techniques, le plus souvent la vaccination. Les vaccins contre les microorganismes qui causent des maladies peuvent préparer le système immunitaire du corps, aidant ainsi à combattre ou à prévenir une infection.
