En économie, l'élasticité est la mesure de la sensibilité d'une variable économique à un changement dans une autre. Par exemple: ▪ "Si je baisse le prix de mon produit, combien deviendrais-je de plus?" ▪ "Si je augmente le prix d'un bien, comment cela affectera-t-il les ventes de cet autre bien?" ▪ «Si nous apprenons qu'une ressource est en train de devenir rare, les gens se précipiteront-ils pour l'acquérir?» Une variable élastique est celle qui répond plus que proportionnellement aux changements d'autres variables. En revanche, une variable inélastique est celle qui change moins que proportionnellement en réponse à des changements dans d'autres variables. L'élasticité peut être quantifiée comme le rapport entre la variation en pourcentage d'une variable et la variation en pourcentage d'une autre variable, lorsque la dernière variable a une influence causale sur la première. Une définition plus précise est donnée en termes de calcul différentiel. C'est un outil permettant de mesurer la réactivité d'une variable à des changements dans une autre variable causale. L'élasticité a l'avantage d'être un rapport sans unité, indépendamment du type de grandeurs variées.
