L'ordre des insectes Neuroptera, ou les insectes à l'aile de filet, comprend les lacets, les sanglots, les fourmis et leurs proches. L'ordre contient environ 6 000 espèces. Le groupe était autrefois connu sous le nom de Planipennia et, à ce moment-là, il s'agissait également d'alderflies, de mouches, de globules gonflés et de serpents, mais ceux-ci sont généralement considérés comme des ordres distincts. Parfois, le nom Neuropterida est utilisé pour désigner ces trois commandes en tant que groupe. Ceci est soit placé au rang des superordonniers, l'Endoptérygota devient un clou non classé au-dessus de celui-ci, ou l'Endoptérgota est maintenu comme un superordonnier, et un Neuropterida non classé en fait partie. Dans les endopterygotes, les parents vivants les plus proches du clade neuropteridien sont les coléoptères. Le nom commun des lacets est souvent utilisé pour les insectes à l'aile les plus connus - les lignées vertes - mais en fait, la plupart des membres des Neuroptera sont désignés comme une sorte de «lacewing». Les adultes de cette ordonnance possèdent quatre ailes membranaires, les ailes antérieures et les sourcils à peu près de même taille et avec de nombreuses veines. Ils ont mâché les parties buccales et subissent une métamorphose complète.
