La liturgie est le culte public coutumier fait par un groupe religieux spécifique, selon ses traditions particulières. Le mot, parfois rendu par son «service» en traduction anglaise, peut se référer à un rituel formel élaboré tel que la liturgie divine orthodoxe et la messe catholique, ou une activité quotidienne comme le salat musulman et les services juifs. En tant que phénomène religieux, la liturgie est une réponse communale à l'activité sacrée par l'éloge, l'action de grâces, la supplication ou le repentir. La Ritualisation peut être associée à des événements de la vie tels que la naissance, l'âge, le mariage et la mort. Il constitue donc la base pour établir une relation avec une agence divine, ainsi qu'avec d'autres participants à la liturgie. Les méthodes d'habillement, la préparation des aliments, l'application de cosmétiques ou d'autres pratiques d'hygiène sont toutes considérées comme des activités liturgiques. Le mot liturgie, dérivé du terme technique en grec ancien, leitourgia, signifie les offres de service souvent coûteuses aux gens et donc aux polis et à l'état. Par l'intermédiaire de la leitourgia, les riches ont eu un fardeau financier et ont été récompensés avec honneur.
