Parent célibataire
Un parent célibataire est un parent, ne vit pas avec un conjoint ou un partenaire, qui a la plupart des responsabilités quotidiennes dans l'éducation de l'enfant ou des enfants. Un parent célibataire est habituellement considéré comme l'aidant principal, c'est-à-dire le parent dont les enfants ont la résidence à la majorité du temps. Si les parents sont séparés ou divorcés, les enfants vivent avec leurs parents gardiens et ont une visite ou une résidence secondaire avec leur parent non gardien. Dans la société occidentale en général, après la séparation, un enfant se retrouvera avec le principal aidant, généralement la mère et un soignant secondaire, habituellement le père. Historiquement, la mort d'un partenaire était une cause majeure de parenté unique. La parentalité peut résulter de la séparation, de la mort, de l'abus ou de la négligence des enfants ou du divorce d'un couple avec des enfants. Les batailles de garde, décernées par le tribunal ou rationalisées dans d'autres termes, déterminent à qui l'enfant passera la majeure partie de son temps. Cela affecte les enfants de plusieurs façons, et des conseils sont suggérés pour eux. Une mère est généralement le principal fournisseur d'soins dans une structure familiale monoparentale en raison d'un divorce ou d'une grossesse non planifiée.
