Un océan (du grec ancien Ὠκεανός (Okeanos), l'océan mondial de l'antiquité classique) est un ensemble d'eau salée qui compose une grande partie de l'hydrosphère d'une planète. Sur Terre, un océan est l'une des principales divisions conventionnelles de l'océan mondial, qui occupe les deux tiers de la surface de la planète. L'eau saline couvre environ 72% de la surface de la planète (~ 3,6 × 108 km2) et est habituellement divisée en plusieurs océans principaux et des mers plus petites, l'océan couvrant environ 71% de la surface terrestre. L'océan contient 97% de l'eau de la Terre, et les océanographes ont déclaré que seulement 5% de l'océan mondial a été exploré. Le volume total est d'environ 1.
