Une phalanstère était un type de bâtiment conçu pour une communauté utopique et développé au début du 19ème siècle par Charles Fourier. Fourier a nommé ces communautés autonomes, idéalement composé de 500-2000 personnes travaillant ensemble pour un bénéfice mutuel, après la phalange, l'unité militaire de base dans la Grèce antique. Bien que Fourier ait publié plusieurs revues à Paris, parmi lesquelles La Phalanstère, il n'a créé aucun phalanstère en Europe en raison d'un manque de soutien financier. Plusieurs des soi-disant colonies ont été fondées aux États-Unis d'Amérique par Albert Brisbane et Horace Greeley. Fourier croyait que la maison traditionnelle était un lieu d'exil et d'oppression des femmes. Il a cru que les rôles de genre pouvaient progresser en les façonnant au sein de la communauté, plus que par des recherches de liberté sexuelle ou d'autres concepts simoniens.
