En économie, la valeur actuelle, également connue sous le nom de valeur actualisée, est un montant futur d'argent qui a été actualisé pour refléter sa valeur actuelle, comme s'il existait aujourd'hui. La valeur actuelle est toujours inférieure ou égale à la valeur future parce que l'argent a un potentiel d'intérêt, une caractéristique appelée valeur temporelle de l'argent. La valeur de temps peut être décrite avec la phrase simplifiée: "Un dollar aujourd'hui vaut plus qu'un dollar demain". Ici, «vaut plus» signifie que sa valeur est plus grande.
