Pumice

Pumice / pʌmɨs /, appelée pumicite sous sa forme de poudre ou de poussière, est une roche volcanique qui se compose d'un verre volcanique à texture rugueuse fortement vésiculaire qui peut contenir ou non des cristaux. Il est typiquement de couleur claire. Scoria est une autre roche volcanique vésiculaire qui diffère de la pierre ponce en ayant des vésicules plus grandes et des murs de vésicules plus épais et étant de couleur foncée et plus dense. La pierre ponce est créée lorsque des roches super-chauffées et hautement pressurées sont éjectées violemment d'un volcan. La configuration mousseuse inhabituelle de la pierre ponce se produit en raison du refroidissement rapide simultané et de la dépressurisation rapide. La dépressurisation crée des bulles en abaissant la solubilité des gaz qui se dissout dans la lave, ce qui provoque l'apparition rapide des gaz. Le refroidissement et la dépressurisation simultanés gèlent les bulles dans la matrice. Les éruptions sous l'eau sont rapidement refroidies et le grand volume de pierre ponce créé peut être dangereux pour l'expédition.

Pumice /ˈpʌmɨs/, called pumicite in its powdered or dust form, is a volcanic rock that consists of highly vesicular rough textured volcanic glass, which may or may not contain crystals. It is typically light colored. Scoria is another vesicular volcanic rock that differs from pumice in having larger vesicles and thicker vesicle walls and being dark colored and denser. Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. The unusual foamy configuration of pumice happens because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. The depressurization creates bubbles by lowering the solubility of gases that are dissolved in the lava, causing the gases to rapidly exsolve. The simultaneous cooling and depressurization freezes the bubbles in the matrix. Eruptions under water are rapidly cooled and the large volume of pumice created can be a shipping hazard.
