Dans la science des matériaux, la trempe est le refroidissement rapide d'une pièce pour obtenir certaines propriétés du matériau. Il empêche les processus à basse température, tels que les transformations de phase, de se produire en fournissant seulement une fenêtre de temps étroite dans laquelle la réaction est à la fois thermodynamiquement favorable et cinétiquement accessible. Par exemple, il peut réduire la cristallinité et augmenter ainsi la ténacité des alliages et des plastiques. En métallurgie, il est le plus couramment utilisé pour durcir l'acier en introduisant la martensite, auquel cas l'acier doit être rapidement refroidi par son point eutectoïde, la température à laquelle l'austénite devient instable. Dans l'acier allié avec des métaux tels que le nickel et le manganèse, la température eutectoïde devient beaucoup plus faible, mais les barrières cinétiques à la transformation de phase restent les mêmes. Cela permet à la trempe de démarrer à une température plus basse, rendant le processus beaucoup plus facile. L'acier à haute vitesse a également ajouté du tungstène, ce qui permet d'élever les barrières cinétiques et de donner l'illusion que le matériau a été refroidi plus rapidement qu'il ne l'avait réellement. Même le refroidissement de ces alliages lentement dans l'air a la plupart des effets désirés de la trempe.
